2026 ETI2.0 Workshop — registration is open!

December 3, 2025 by Tao

The upcoming 2026 ETI 2.0 Workshop will be held at The Ohio State University – Ohio Union in Columbus, OH, on March 19 – 20. Please register here now!

Participants from university partners, national laboratories, and government will come together to review the research projects funded by NNSA’s Office of Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation Research and Development (DNN R&D). This workshop is a great opportunity to strengthen the research collaboration between the national labs and the universities in support of innovative technologies across three thrust areas for nuclear nonproliferation. It also fosters and cultivates a research and educational environment where students can interact with peers from universities and scientists from the national labs. In addition to the welcome remarks and plenary presentations, the workshop will feature technical talks, poster presentations, a recruitment session, and lab tour. All presenters will attend in-person. More info are coming at the workshop website soon, stay tuned!

Well Represented in Japan for the 2025 IEEE NSSMIC

November 10, 2025 by Tao

ETI2.0 was well represented in Yokohama last week for the 2025 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium, Medical Imaging Conference (November 1 – 8, 2025) — the annual gathering of people who actually build the sensors, detectors, and algorithms that keep the nuclear world measurable, accountable, and safe.

The ETI GT/TAMU/CSM/OSU/UW/LANL team presented across multiple sessions:
✅ Advanced SiPM Technologies
✅ AI for Enhanced Fiber-Optic Monitoring
✅ Polysiloxane Mixed-Field Scintillator Arrays
✅ Real-Time Neutron Multiplicity & Source Localization
✅ Radiation Effects on Diamond NV Quantum Sensors for Reactor Dosimetry
✅ Silicon Carbide Radiation Detector Performance Up to 600 °C
✅ Metal-Hydride Gas Detector for Tritium Quantification

Across the slate, SiPMs, diamond NV, polysiloxanes, SiC, fiber systems, metal-hydride gas detectors, neutron multiplicity, the message is the same: There is no nuclear renaissance without an instrumentation renaissance.

In addition to the technical presentations from the consortium members, Dr. Anna Erickson chaired a session with Dr. Sara Pozzi — “Sensors & Systems for Non-Destructive Assay and Safeguards of Nuclear Material”.

Proud of the students, collaborators, and the entire Consortium for Enabling Technologies and Innovation 2.0 ecosystem for pushing these technologies forward. This is what a modern, interdisciplinary nuclear workforce looks like — hands-on and field-ready.

Showcased Accomplishments at UPR 2025

June 9, 2025 by Tao

NNSA’s Office of Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation Research and Development (DNN R&D) held its annual University Program Review (UPR) meeting from June 3 – June 5, 2025 at the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. Over 250 participants representing university partners, national laboratories, and the government joined together at this event. The ETI/ETI2.0 team showcased the accomplishments of the DNN R&D-funded research projects to the broader nuclear security and nonproliferation community.

UPR is an unclassified venue for sponsors to review the accomplishments of grantees; stakeholders within the community to engage sponsored researchers; a forum to stimulate collaboration, technology transfer, and integration; and a venue where students and early career scientists can interact with their peers in a rigorous, yet collegial, environment.

All ETI/ETI2.0 presentations are very impressive, including 15 oral talks and 25 posters! This year’s UPR Student Award winners for the ETI/ETI2.0 team are:

  • Best Poster Presentation: Morgan Fandrey (Dr. Alan Sellinger group, Colorado School of Mines)
  • Best Oral Presentation: Mackenzie Duce (Dr. Anna Erickson group, Georgia Tech)
  • Best National Lab Project: Patrick Snarr (Dr. Derek Haas group, The University of Texas at Austin)

Great efforts and contributions from the ETI/ETI2.0 members to make the UPR 2025 successful!

ETI Summer School on Theatre Screen Now!

March 6, 2025 by Tao

The week-long ETI Annual Summer School was successfully held in-person by the Consortium for Enabling Technologies and Innovation (ETI) at Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, TN, on August 11 – 16, 2024. This summer school was filmed, and has been recently edited into a Hollywood-style movie. Welcome to watch this ETI Summer School movie at your own theatre now!

In this summer school, cross-cutting technologies across core disciplines for nuclear nonproliferation were explored, including data science and nuclear nonproliferation, instrumentation in fuel cycle monitoring, material selection  and sensor manufacturing, facility surveillance and predictive analytics. In addition to invited lectures and panel discussion by research scientists, in-person hands-on experiments, lab demonstrations and tours were also conducted, including travel to ORNL to meet phenomenal scientists and tour comprehensive & advanced labs.
